Synopsis
It is 1923 in rural Adalucía, Spain. Sasha García’s life is almost ideal, as he balances his good-natured dedication to his parents and sisters, his love for the land that he toils, and his secret passion for childhood friend Emilio. But at age 28, his parents have been worrying for some time now about the need for Sasha to start his own family. Being the only son, such a step is the only way to ensure that their land remains García land. Sasha has other plans, however, and insists on putting off the selection of a bride. As the pressure increases, Sasha and Emilio confide in each other. Both are feeling the weight of tradition. Sasha, always the stronger-willed of the two, continues to resist his family’s attempts to find him a bride.
When Sasha’s mother enlists the help of the local priest to present young Isabel Montero at a García family dinner, Sasha can take no more and excuses himself. He flees to a secret spot where he and his lover have met since they were young. When Emilio arrives, Sasha’s world crumbles. Emilio has not been as strong as Sasha, and has succumbed to his parents’ pressure. He will marry Begona, the wealthy daughter of a neighboring landowner.
In a haze, Sasha continues through the motions of his life. He silently agrees to marry Isabel Montero. Now that Emilio has betrayed him, what other choice does he have? But his life reaches a crisis when on the night before Sasha’s wedding, Emilio appears at his window. Sasha’s old lover is disheveled and distraught. He begs Sasha to abandon his plans to wed and run away where they can be together. But Sasha, ever strong-willed, has already made his choice. Duty, he feels, is more faithful than passion. He rejects Emilio’s advances and walks down the aisle towards his new life. Passion is sacrificed for tradition and filial duty.
